Parents think it is to dangerous for me to play ice hockey?

I am 13 and I want to join the local ice hockey team but because I am an only child. My mom is all up in arms about me joining ice hockey because that would Mean that her only child (me) could get hurt with a confusion or somethng. I have enough money to pay for the hockey equipment and the entrence fee. I really want to play hockey it's been a dream. Dose anybody have any ideas as to what I can say to my mom to convince her that it is fairly safe to play ice hockey??
